Greenhouse gala dinner invitations: five mistakes
Damp air, a badly set hour and a dress code nobody understands can sink a greenhouse gala. Five things to fix before you send the invitation.

You step into the greenhouse at 18:40 to check the table and your glasses fog up in ten seconds. That is the air your guests will be reading their greenhouse gala dinner invitations in: standing up, phone in one hand, coat still on. Glass holds moisture, sound bounces off it, and the temperature drops the moment the sun goes. Most invitations for a greenhouse gala dinner ignore all three.
None of this is about fonts. It is about five decisions you make before you send anything: what the invitation is made of, what time you write on it, what you tell people to wear, where the replies land, and what you do when something changes at the last minute. Get those right and the evening looks after itself.
Humidity gets to the paper before the first drink
Condensation in a glass house is constant, not occasional. Thick card stock starts to curl within a few hours, and the ink on the date bleeds at the edges. If any part of your invitation is printed, test it in that room before you order anything.
- Leave a sample card on a table in the greenhouse overnight. If it is curled at breakfast, that material is not for that room.
- Keep the date, the time and the address on the invitation itself, and nothing else that can change. Nothing handwritten in damp air.
- If paper is not negotiable, split it: a link for everyone, plus a few printed copies kept in an envelope until the end of the night for the people who will file them away.
- Put the details that can still move — time, map, dress code — on the link, where you correct them without reprinting a single card.
Two times, not one: the hour a greenhouse changes
A glass greenhouse at 13:00 with direct sun can sit at 30°C (86°F). At 19:30 the temperature falls fast as soon as the heating goes down. If your invitation says 'dinner at eight' and nothing else, half your guests arrive in a coat and the other half are sweating by the corridor.
Write two moments instead of one. '19:30, drinks in the central aisle. 20:15, dinner under the dome.' Nobody walks in while everyone is already seated. If people are travelling from another city or country, add the time zone: '19:30 CET' saves you the message asking whether that is local time.

A greenhouse gala is decided before you send anything: what the paper does in damp air, what time you write down and what you tell people to wear.
A dress code for a greenhouse gala dinner
'Formal' means something different to everyone, and in a greenhouse it means even less. Two exact words do the work: 'black tie' or 'dark suit'. Then add the floor, because a greenhouse has gravel, slabs and ramps: 'block heels or flat shoes' saves an ankle on the way to the table. Name the temperature too — 'the greenhouse stays at around 18°C (65°F); a light coat is useful for the walk out'.
The RSVP that disappears into a group chat
'I'm coming' in a group of 90 messages is not a reply. When you count tables you are four people short, and all four did write. Ask for answers in the confirmation form itself, with the questions you will actually use when you set the tables, so the replies arrive in one ordered list. You can also add your own photos of the greenhouse, scene by scene, from the door to the toast, so guests recognise the place before they arrive.
If the dinner moves half an hour, paper means calling everyone one by one. With a link, the updated version is what everyone sees without doing anything: move the pin on the map, fix a street name, change the welcome line. The link stays the same. Check these five things before you send anything — what the paper does in damp air, the two times, the two words of the dress code, where the replies land, and how you fix a change at 18:00. With a digital invitation from Send The Joy (€29.99, one payment) the link updates itself and confirmations arrive inside the invitation. No reprints, no chasing replies through the phone.
