Wedding invitations: write guest names, not 'plus one'

One name on the invitation stops a question before it arrives. Here is how to write guest names on wedding invitations, and what to do when you don't know the partner.

One name on the invitation stops a question before it arrives. Here is how to write guest names on wedding invitations, and what to do when you don't know the partner.

You send the invitation link on a Tuesday. Ana confirms within the hour. Two weeks later she messages to ask if she can bring her cousin. The table plan says eight. You are now counting nine, the night before the wedding.

That happened because of two words on the invitation: 'and guest'. Writing guest names on wedding invitations takes ten minutes and removes the question entirely. 'Ana and Luis' does not generate that message.

Wedding invitations: guest names instead of 'and guest'

What you write on the invitation sets the rule for the whole list. 'And guest' is a rule with no edges. It can mean the partner Ana has been with for six years, or someone she met three weeks ago. Meanwhile you are the one counting chairs and paying per head without knowing the final number.

  • 'And guest' leaves the second seat open to whoever your guest decides to bring, including at short notice.
  • A nameless plus one raises a second doubt: does the person coming with me count in the reply? A name answers that before anyone asks.
  • If Ana replies that she is coming alone and then fills the seat later, you find out after the numbers are settled.
  • 'Ana and Luis' tells you the party is two people, and the seating plan holds.

How to write the names: order, titles and children

Put the person you know first, then their partner: 'Maria and Javier', 'Elena and Marcos'. Being married or not does not change the order. Skip 'Mr and Mrs' unless the couple uses titles themselves. First names are enough on a wedding invitation.

For families, write the adults and then the children: 'Ana and Luis, and their children Pablo and Marta'. If you want an adults-only wedding, 'The Garcia Family' is the wrong shorthand — it invites everyone in the house. Put the adults' names on the invitation and add one plain line: this one is for grown-ups.

If you don't know their partner's name

Ask. One message is enough: 'Are you bringing someone? Send me their name and I will put it on the invitation.' Most people reply with the name, and they usually prefer it to being called 'and guest'.

If you really cannot reach them, 'and guest' is the fallback. Accept two things: that invitation cannot be personalized, and you may not know your final number until the replies come in.

You can change a name after sending the invitation

With Send The Joy the invitation is a web page, not a PDF or a printed card. If the partner changes, or you finally learn the name, you open the editor, type it in, and the link stays the same. Nothing is reprinted and nobody gets a second message to the whole list. Guests who open the link again see the corrected version.

The replies arrive inside the invitation, in an ordered list, so you can see who is coming and with whom. Start there: put a first and last name on every line for the adults, add the children by name if they are invited, and leave 'and guest' out unless you truly have no other option.
