The Real Price of Paper Anniversary Invitations

Paper anniversary invitations are billed by the run, not by the guest. Here's the full sum — envelopes, reprints and all — and why a €29.99 link never needs a second print.

You sit down with the quote from the print shop and the first number looks fine. Then you read the rest of the page: a minimum run of 100, 300gsm cotton with a deckled edge, ribbon tied by hand, 100 envelopes, postage to three countries. You are inviting 40 people.

Paper is the traditional first-anniversary gift, and the invitation is where the bill actually lands. But the price of paper anniversary invitations is set by the run, not by the guest list. The card itself is rarely the expensive part. Envelopes, postage and the second print run are.

Paper anniversary invitations are priced by the run

Printers set up the press once and then print a fixed number. If that number is 100 and you need 40, you buy 100 anyway. Weight and finish move the price again: a heavier sheet, an embossed logo, a wax seal pressed one at a time. None of that shows up in the first figure you were given.

  • The minimum run. You need 40, the shop prints in batches of 100, and the ones you don't send sit in a drawer.
  • Weight and finish. 300gsm with relief is not the price of matte card, and anything glued or tied on by hand is not the price of either.
  • Envelopes, stamps and postage. Sixty envelopes going to three cities is its own line on the invoice.
  • Reprints. Once the plates are made, every correction is charged again, and a wrong time is wrong on all 100 copies.

The extras arrive after you've said yes to the first number

A colour proof, calligraphy on the envelopes, a custom wax seal, a heavier envelope liner. Each one enters the conversation once you've agreed to the main figure, and each one is small on its own.

Paper also doesn't forgive mistakes. A name spelled wrong is spelled wrong on every copy already printed. And a time crossed out in pen on the corner of a beautiful invitation is visible on the day your guests take it out of the envelope.

Five questions for the printer, in writing

Send these in one email before you approve anything. If an answer changes later, you have it in writing.

  • The minimum run, and what 10 more copies cost.
  • Paper weight and finish, with a physical sample in your hand.
  • Envelope, stamp and postage cost per address.
  • Delivery time, and the last date for changes at no extra cost.
  • Who corrects the proofs, and how many rounds are included.

Paper locks in every detail the day it goes to press. A link keeps up with you.

Send The Joy

A Send The Joy invitation costs €29.99, paid once, with no subscription, and it isn't a PDF. It's a web page for your event: you share it as a link, a QR code or a message, and your guests open it in a browser and confirm from their phone without installing anything. Change the time, the venue or the dress code after you've sent it, and the same link shows the new version. RSVPs arrive inside the invitation, in one ordered list.

If someone in your family is going to frame the invitation, print a few copies and send the link to everyone else. Send The Joy doesn't print or post anything, so those copies come from a local shop and the paper stays a keepsake. Add up the run, the envelopes and the reprints before you decide; the printed version usually costs more than the link. Try a design free, edit the cover in the browser, and pay the €29.99 when the price stops surprising you.
