A Málaga wedding in May comes down to two hours: shade at 18:00, dinner at 21:30. Here's the timetable, plus the invitation that keeps up with it.

It's 18:00 in Málaga in May and the sun is still on the top half of the wall. Half your guests have found shade next to the Cathedral. The other half are fanning themselves in full light and checking their watches. Nobody is annoyed yet, but that's the risk with a May wedding here: the light decides who's comfortable, and your timetable decides everything else.

So pick your hours before you pick your menu. Once you know when the shade lands where you want it, the cocktail, the photos and the dress code all fall into place. This is the shape that works in Málaga in May.

Málaga May wedding invitations: choose the hour before the menu

Walk the venue at the exact time you're considering. If the ceremony is outdoors at 18:00, you need real shade: the shadowed side of the Cathedral, a whitewashed patio, a narrow street in the old town where the buildings do the work. Not a parasol, and not a hope for a breeze. If you're marrying near the Patio de los Naranjos, stand on the side that isn't taking direct sun at that hour.

  • Ceremony at 18:00 in genuine shade: the shadowed side of the Cathedral, a whitewashed patio, or an old-town street where the buildings block the light.
  • No dinner service before 21:00. At 20:30, a west-facing terrace still takes direct sun and you'll be lowering awnings in the middle of the speeches.
  • Leave 30 to 45 minutes between ceremony and cocktail for water, fans and hellos. Ceremony ends at 18:45, cocktail at 19:00 in a shaded patio, nobody crowding the door.
  • Check where the shadow moves. A patio that's cool at 19:00 can be in full sun by 20:30.

The running order that works: 18:00, cocktail, a long dinner

Ceremony at 18:00. Cocktail at 18:45 somewhere shaded. Dinner at 21:15 or 21:30, when the light is low and golden and nobody is eating with a hand over their eyes. If you're marrying in a church without air conditioning, plan to be outside by 19:15 and take the cocktail to a patio with an awning or trees. A country house in the Montes de Málaga at 20:00 tends to be cooler than the centre of town.

Water before anything else: a jug on every table, plus lemonade or rebujito in the cocktail area. For group photos, put people with their backs to the sun and look for a wall that throws shadow. A narrow side street next to the Cathedral at 18:30 can be enough to keep faces from squinting. And say what to wear: light suit, linen, shoes that survive cobblestones. That one line prevents more complaints than any fan.

Book the shade first, the menu second. In Málaga in May, the hour is the decoration.

Put each hour on the invitation, scene by scene

Give the ceremony and the dinner their own scene, each with its own time, map and photo, so nobody has to message you asking which patio you meant. If you move the cocktail at the last minute, you edit the invitation and the link stays the same: guests open the updated version instead of you writing to forty people one by one. Add a yes/no question to the RSVP, something like "Are you staying for dinner?", and you know who to count for the table plan. A digital invitation from Send The Joy costs 29,99 EUR as a one-off payment, no subscription, and you can design and preview it free before you buy.
