Leather Anniversary Invitations: Etiquette at 3 Years

What to write on a third-anniversary invitation: one label, the host line first, dress code in a single line, and why a link saves you a reprint.

What to write on a third-anniversary invitation: one label, the host line first, dress code in a single line, and why a link saves you a reprint.

Three years ago you signed the register in a room with fluorescent lighting while your brother's speech ran long. This year it's a long table at a wine bar, twenty people and a toast. You open the invitation editor and the first field stops you: what do you call it?

Year three is the leather anniversary, so that part is decided. The rest of leather anniversary invitations is order rather than inspiration: hosts first, then what's being celebrated, the date, the place, the dress code and the reply date. Get the sequence right and you won't answer the same question twenty times.

Leather anniversary invitations: pick one label

Leather is the traditional material for a third anniversary. On the invitation that means one label, not two: 'Leather anniversary' or 'Third anniversary', never both stacked on the same line. They read differently — the first sounds like a theme, the second like a fact — so pick the one that matches your evening.

  • Label: 'Leather anniversary' or 'Third anniversary'. One of them.
  • First line: 'Three years ago we signed this, tonight we celebrate it.' A bare 'You're invited' wastes the best line on the page.
  • What the evening actually is: dinner and a toast, drinks and cake, a long lunch. Name it.
  • Date, time, address and town together, in a block that can go straight into a calendar.

Who's hosting comes before the date

The host line sits above the date: 'Ana and Diego celebrate three years', or 'Marta invites you to the third anniversary of Ana and Diego' when a sister is arranging it. The order does the work: who's inviting · what's being celebrated · date and time · place with the full address. A worked example you can copy: 'Elena and Marcos · Leather anniversary · Saturday 14 March, 8:30 pm · The Old Wine Store, 12 Bridge Street'.

Dress code fits on one line. 'Black tie' and 'formal' don't mean the same thing in every country: if you want dark suits and long dresses, write 'black tie'; if you'd rather not, write 'formal' or 'cocktail'. Leather tones work as a suggestion, not a rule — cognac, camel, chocolate, burgundy — and 'earth tones welcome' is enough. Then one line for whoever owns no suit: wear what you feel good in.

Three years in, etiquette isn't heavier paper. It's the host, the date and the dress code arriving before the questions do.

Etiquette doesn't ask for card stock; it asks for the details to reach every guest on time, and one link does that better than an envelope. Guests open it in a browser — phone, tablet or laptop, no app to install — and reply from the same page. The answers collect in one ordered list inside the invitation, so nothing has to be rebuilt from scattered messages. Change the time, the venue, the map or the dress code after sending and the link stays the same: everyone sees the version you have now and nobody reprints an envelope. If your grandparents or the friends who keep every card want something in hand, the sensible split is a link for everyone and a handful of printed copies for them. Your leather anniversary invitations are mostly written already — pick a design, try it for free, then personalise the label, date, place and photos in the browser.
