Gender reveal invitations in Barcelona: mind the file name

A file called invitacion-nino.pdf travels further than you think. How to run a gender reveal in Barcelona without the name on the label giving it away.

Your aunt's phone lights up on the kitchen table. She hasn't picked it up yet, but the notification already says everything: invitacion-nino.pdf. Half a second, screen still locked, and the surprise is gone. The message you sent was careful, the folder was tidy, none of it helped. The file name got there first.

That's how a gender reveal gets spoiled. Not with a careless comment at dinner, but with a label sitting on a phone. You can plan the confetti, the cake and the moment the grandmother opens the link, and still lose all of it to a name nobody thought to change.

The file name gives it away before the colour does

A PDF or a photo arrives with its own label attached. WhatsApp, email, AirDrop: the file keeps the name it was saved with, whatever caption you add on top. There's no setting that hides it, and no friendly message that covers it up.

  • Check the lock screen. If the name can be read in a notification while the phone is closed, you're already telling the secret.
  • Forwarding doesn't fix it. The file travels with its label through WhatsApp, email or AirDrop, no matter what you write above it.
  • Shared folders are the worst case. '01-girl.jpg' inside a folder called 'Barcelona reveal' gives it away before anyone taps the photo.
  • Old downloads stay put. The files the designer sent you are still sitting in your computer's downloads folder under their original name.

The five-second test before you hit send

Look at your own lock screen first. If you can read the name with the phone face-up and locked, so can everyone else. It takes five seconds and it saves the whole thing.

Then check where the file actually lives. The downloads folder on the family computer is usually the culprit: three versions of the same invitation, all of them named after the answer. Ask someone you trust to open the link cold and tell you what they think it is. If they guess right, change the label before you send anything.

The secret rarely leaks in the wording. It leaks in the file name, the folder and the notification.

Send The Joy

A digital invitation is a web page, not an attachment. You share it with a link, a QR code or a message, and there's no file moving between phones with a name on it. One link serves everyone. Guests open it in the browser and reply from their phone without installing anything, and it costs 29,99 EUR per invitation, paid once, with no subscription.

Barcelona: the reveal also plays out in language

Half the family reads in Catalan, half in Spanish, and the grandparents who flew in might need something else. The invitation content can be set per language, so the message lands just as clearly for everyone. Put a real time rather than 'in the afternoon' — if the table is at 18:00, say 18:00 — and keep the RSVP inside the invitation, so confirmations arrive in one ordered list instead of a group chat with forty people asking when it starts.

If you want the secret to hold until the last second, start with the link. There's no file called 'boy' or 'girl' going round the phones. Try a Send The Joy invitation for free, set the wording the way you want and send it when it's ready.
