It's 9 p.m. and you're editing the Canva file you sent last Tuesday. The banquet moved from 2 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., so you export the new version and drop it into four group chats. Someone will still open the old file on Saturday. A digital invitation doesn't work like that: it's a web page for your event, the link stays the same when you edit it, and you can build one and send it today from the collection.

Nobody charges you for the template. You pay in the hours around it: the file you send twice, the confirmations you copy by hand and the guest who asks on Thursday where he's supposed to reply.

The free Canva template is paid for in hours

With a template, the invitation is a file. When the time changes, the version you already sent is wrong; you send it again and some guests keep opening the old one. Confirmations arrive loose on WhatsApp, between voice notes and memes, and the night before you give the caterer the final number you're copying names into a spreadsheet. Adding a 'reply here' line inside the file doesn't fix it: the guest has to leave the file, type an answer, and sometimes answers in the wrong chat.

  • Change the time on your template and count how many different files or links you've already sent.
  • Ask five guests where they're supposed to confirm. If they hesitate, your system isn't working.
  • Time yourself copying replies from WhatsApp into a spreadsheet. That's the real price of free.
  • Check whether your invitation has room for a map, music, a dress code and your own photos.

Digital invitation vs Canva template: what a web page does differently

A digital wedding invitation is a page of its own for the event. You share it with a link, a QR code or a message, and your guests open it in the browser and confirm from their phone without installing anything. Edit the time, the venue, the map, the dress code or a single sentence after sending it, and the link stays the same. Nobody has to receive a new file.

Replies land inside the invitation, in an ordered list, with the RSVP questions you set yourself, so there's no chasing anyone in chats. The invitation runs in scenes you fill with your own text and photos — up to six, and you pick which one opens the page. There's music, a character counter so a long line doesn't break the layout, and the editor works in the browser with a live preview.

A template tells your guests what you knew last week. An invitation that updates itself tells them what's happening now.

What Canva does better, and when digital invitations are overkill

For anything printed, Canva is the right tool: the drinks menu at the bar, the signs for the photocall, the card on each plate. If someone in the family will keep a copy on paper, combine the two — one link for everyone and a handful of printed copies for the people who'll keep them.

How much does a digital invitation cost, and what to check before paying

One price: €29.99 per invitation, a single payment, no subscription. You edit the cover free before buying, and paying unlocks every scene. Check three things before you choose: that the link keeps working when you change the time or the map, that replies arrive in a list instead of in a chat, and that the price doesn't keep running after the wedding. Try your cover free and decide with the real page in front of you.
