If the link to your digital invitation doesn't open, your guests won't tell you — they just won't come. Here's how to test it and send it right the first time.

Saturday morning, kitchen table, coffee going cold. You paste the link into the group chat, write 'here's the invitation', and put the phone down. Half an hour later your cousin answers: it doesn't open. You try it yourself and it works. What went wrong is simple: you sent the link you were looking at, not the one your guests need. When a digital invitation link 'expires' on someone else's phone, the clock is almost never the problem. How it was copied, tested and sent usually is.

A digital invitation is one page with one address. If that address leaves your hands in the wrong state, guests don't see a broken link. They see nothing, and nobody writes to tell you. They just don't reply. Here are the mistakes that cause it, and how to avoid each one.

You test it on your own phone, signed in, with the page already loaded once. Everything works. That proves nothing. Open the same link in an incognito window, with no session, and then on a phone that isn't yours. What you see there is what a guest sees. The QR code needs the same treatment: download the file and check it reads from a screen. A cropped screenshot of a QR code is a grey blur to a camera.

  • Open the link in an incognito window, with no session signed in.
  • Open it again on a phone that isn't yours, ideally on a different network.
  • Download the QR code and check another device's camera reads it from the screen.
  • Send it to one person you trust first, and ask them what they see.

Don't send the draft to the guest group

In trial mode you can edit the cover without paying, and it looks finished enough to share. It isn't. Every scene unlocks when you buy the invitation, and the whole invitation goes out when you publish it. Before that, there's nothing to send. A link to a half-built invitation makes the party look half-planned.

The other half of the problem is the PDF. It lands in a downloads folder nobody opens twice, so two weeks later the guest checking the time can't find it. Paste the same long link into a photo caption on WhatsApp and the last stretch gets cut when a guest copies it. They tap, nothing happens, and they give up. A link opens in the browser with one tap, on any phone, with nothing to install.

Group chats talk about everything, and your link is one line in the middle of it. Pin it to the top of the chat, or leave it in the group description where it stays put. Send it with three words in front — 'Marta and Luis's invitation' — because a bare link reads like an advert and gets scrolled past. Replies arrive inside the invitation itself, in one ordered list, so you're not chasing people one by one to ask who's coming.

Nobody tells you the link is broken. They just stop answering.

This is what saves you the awkward message. Say the restaurant confirms 8pm instead of 7:30. You change the time, and the link sitting in everyone's phone shows 8pm the next time they open it. The parking map you forgot goes in that afternoon. The dress code changes to something warmer. No reprints, no 'correction' at the top of the group chat. If you're sending your invitation this week, open the link in an incognito window and on a phone that isn't yours before you hit send. It takes a minute, and it's the difference between a full table and a quiet one.
