It's 5:20 on a Saturday in October. There's a four-year-old in a pumpkin costume refusing to put his shoes on, and one parent is already standing at the open door. If you're working out what time a Halloween party starts when the guests are three to six, the answer has more to do with the last snack of the day than with sunset. You can pick a design from the catalogue, set that time and send a digital invitation today.

Children this age don't negotiate with the dark. They don't care that Halloween feels better after nightfall. What decides the afternoon is the start time and, more quietly, the pick-up time. Get those two right and everything else has room to happen: the costumes, the sweets, the carved pumpkin on the landing.

What time does a Halloween party start for three to six year olds?

For this age, 5:00 to 5:30pm is the sensible window: they arrive, they eat something, two games, and home before tiredness takes over. If the party is at yours, the time you write is when the door opens, not when the first guest rings. At 5:00 the pumpkins are already outside and the table is set, even if nobody turns up until 5:30. Starting after 7pm with this age group means asking a four-year-old to hold a costume and a mood together at the same time.

  • Start time as a number: 17:30 (5:30pm), straight after school
  • Pick-up on its own line: 19:30 (7:30pm), through the usual front door
  • One costume note: put on at home or put on here, but don't leave it to chance
  • One food line: we eat at 6pm, no dinner afterwards

Two and a half hours, with both times written separately

A 5:30 to 8:00pm block works: half an hour of arrivals, an hour of games and food, then a staggered exit that doesn't turn into a jam in the hallway. Write the two times on separate lines — “5:30pm, doors open” and “7:30pm, pick-up” — because parents read the second one before the first, and they'll thank you for making it plain. If parents are staying, say so in the same line: it changes how many kitchen chairs you need and how much coffee to make. Keep the scares small, too: a knock at six and an aunt in cat ears on the step is better for a five-year-old than anything with blood in it.

Then spell out the small things that would otherwise cost you twenty messages. Write the number instead of a phrase: “5:30pm, straight after school” beats “mid-afternoon”, and “17:30” removes the last doubt. Say whether the costume goes on at home or at yours — that's twenty minutes and three children crying in the bathroom. This is the part most digital invitations handle badly: one date field, no pick-up line. If food matters, put it in the invitation text or in a question you write in the RSVP yourself. Finish with two lines of logistics: who collects, at what time, and which door — the creaking one on the left, if that's the case.

The party doesn't end when the sweets run out. It ends at the time you wrote on the invitation.

One message saying “around six” produces ten different arrival times. A digital invitation is a page for your party, not a PDF: 6pm sits on the cover and everyone reads the same thing, whether they open the link, the QR code or the message you send them. Change your mind and you edit it in Joy Studio — the link stays the same, so nothing is resent and nobody needs chasing. Replies land inside the invitation in one ordered list, so you know how many small glasses to put out. It's 29.99 EUR, paid once, no subscription, and your guests install nothing. Set the time once; then go and carve the second pumpkin.
