Six in the evening, low orange light across the concrete apron, a red truck parked nose-out behind you. That is the frame everyone wants from a gender reveal at a fire station, and it only exists if someone said yes weeks earlier. Build the digital invitation first: pick a design, fill in the fields, publish, and you have a link to send today while the permit conversation is still going on.

The reveal itself lasts about ten seconds. Everything that makes those ten seconds work — the permit, where people stand, which colour survives grey concrete — is a fortnight of small decisions. Do them in this order and nothing on the day feels improvised.

Book the fire station before the gender reveal

A fire station is not a venue you hire by the hour. Visits fit around shifts and call-outs, so the permission comes first, before the invitation text and before you tell anyone the date.

  • Call three or four weeks ahead and ask who deals with visits. Slots move with the shift rota, not with your calendar.
  • Ask what time the trucks are back in the bay. A quiet morning or just after a shift change beats a busy afternoon. If a real call comes in, the plan stops and nobody minds, but you want to know that before you give guests a time.
  • Get it in writing that you can use the siren, the ladder or the truck as a backdrop. House rules do not change because a different crew is on duty that day.
  • Keep the printed permit and the duty officer's mobile number together, in one place, on the day.

Lay out the shot before you choose a colour

Mark the reveal spot a few metres in front of the truck and keep four or five metres clear back to your guests. Nobody blocks the photo that way, and the engine can still pull out if it has to. Smoke, confetti and flares stay on the apron, never inside the bay. Give three people one job each: one holds the board with the date, one films, one handles the cake and the table. Anyone who will be in the photo wears plain dark clothes — the truck and the reflective stripes are already doing enough.

Then the colour, chosen for the wall you actually have. Grey concrete and yellow reflective stripes flatten pastel pink and pastel blue. Take the intense versions; they read on a phone screen. A coloured smoke flare burns for under a minute, so count to three out loud, light it and keep filming until it dies. Shooting vertical for phones? Put guests in two rows, not a circle. In a circle somebody always ends up with their back to the camera.

The station gives you the backdrop. The invitation gives you the time, the map and the headcount.

Send The Joy

A digital invitation beats forty 'what time was it again?' messages

The link opens in any browser and no one installs an app, so grandparents, cousins and the friend on Android all confirm from their own screen. If the station moves your slot, edit the invitation and everyone sees the new version: nothing to resend, nothing to reprint. Replies collect inside the same invitation in one ordered list, so you know how many you are feeding before you order the cake. It is 29.99 EUR, a single payment, no subscription. Send The Joy prints nothing — if someone wants a copy for the fridge, share the link with everyone and print two or three on your own. Build it before you make the call and you have one less thread to hold.
