Digital invitation: A free Halloween template can lose its accents or expire before the party. Here's what to check, and how a digital invitation fixes it

You've carved two pumpkins, the porch light is on, and the family chat has gone quiet in the way that means nobody has read anything. So you search for free Halloween invitations, download a template, and by the time you paste it into the chat the time on it is already wrong. It doesn't have to work like that: you can choose a design from the catalogue, put your own date, address and photo on it, and send the link today. A digital invitation is a page, not a file.

The free ones tend to fail in the same three places: the watermark, the characters, and the link. None of it shows up in the preview on your laptop at two in the afternoon. All of it shows up at ten at night, on a phone, in front of the people you invited.

The watermark is louder than the costume

Open the template on your phone, not on your laptop. That's the size the aunt who confirms from the sofa will see, and it's the size where the provider's logo lands, usually right on top of the time. Swap the stock photo for one of your own porch and look again. A logo over a stock pumpkin looks careless. The same logo over the room where the party actually happens looks like you stopped halfway.

  • Open the template on your phone and check the cover, the frame and the footer for the provider's logo.
  • Count the marked elements: three of them means half the invitation isn't yours.
  • Swap the stock photo for one of your own table and see whether the mark still covers the date.
  • Screenshot the free version now, so you can compare it later with what you actually send.

Free Halloween invitations vs a digital invitation

Start with the characters. Type a name with an accent and a name with an apostrophe into the text field — Zoë, O'Brien, Muñoz — and read what comes back. If the template returns a row of question marks or turns O'Brien into O’Brien, the name on the invitation is already wrong in the chat. Then the punctuation you actually use: an ampersand in Mum & Dad, an em dash, a question mark at the start of a line if half your guest list speaks Spanish.

If the invitation is going out in two languages, check that the same field accepts both. Otherwise you end up with two versions of the same name and no idea which one the grandparents received. Two minutes of typing and one look at the preview on a phone screen tell you whether the template is worth keeping.

A free template is only free until the link dies the night before the party.

Run the test of the 31st. Paste the free link into the family group and open it from another phone, without signing in to anything. If it asks for a password, an account or an app, half the guest list stops at the door. If it has an expiry date or a limit on visits, the cousin who checks on the 30th gets a blank screen. Then change one word and see whether the address changes: if it does, you're sending the message to thirty people all over again. A digital invitation from the catalogue skips all of it. Digital invitations are pages for your event, not files: guests open them in any browser, confirm from their phone, and see the updated version whenever you move the time to ten. It costs 29,99 EUR, one payment, no subscription. Pick a design, add your own photos and a line about sweets and costumes in your own words, publish, and the answers arrive in one list inside the invitation.
