Digital invitation: 5 bilingual wedding mistakes

A digital invitation in two languages fails in predictable places: two links, a date read backwards, a dress code that changes with language. Fix it before you send

A digital invitation for a bilingual wedding breaks in the same place almost every time: someone builds two pages, one per language, and sends a different link to each side of the family. Marta's aunt confirms on the English page, her cousin confirms on the Spanish one, and now there are two lists and a group chat full of screenshots while you work out who is actually coming. It does not need two pages. You can pick a design, set the content per language on a single link and send it today.

The five mistakes below are the ones you can fix in ten minutes, before the link goes out. None of them is about the design. All of them are about what happens after a guest opens the invitation on their phone.

Two pages look tidy in a spreadsheet. In practice the English page and the Spanish page collect separate replies, and nobody owns the job of merging them on a Sunday night. Then someone forwards the link on WhatsApp with "send this to the German side", and by Friday three versions are circulating, one of them still showing last month's time.

  • One link for everyone, with the content set per language inside that same invitation.
  • Replies that land in one list, in the order they arrive.
  • The month written out and the time spelled the same way in both versions.
  • Proper nouns and the venue left alone; only the labels get translated.

How to create a bilingual wedding invitation that holds up on a phone

Open the translated version on your own phone with the browser set to English. Short Spanish lines grow when they turn into English, and the date field is usually the first to push against the character counter. Check each field on its own: the short label at the top, the names, the date, the line under it, the place. The classic slip is translating the label and leaving the sentence underneath in Spanish in the middle of the English page.

Then press the confirmation button in both languages. If the RSVP questions only exist in one version, half your guests will answer by private message instead. Do this check on a phone and not on a laptop, because that is where nearly everyone will open the link.

A bilingual invitation is not two invitations. It is one link that happens to speak both languages.

The time, the date and the names that change meaning

Ceremonia a las 17:00 becomes 5 p.m. on the English page, and someone reads the other version and arrives an hour early. Write the hour the same way in both, add the time zone if people are flying in, and spell the date as 12 December rather than 10/12: in Spain that is December, in the US it is October.

Place names stay as they are. Hacienda San Rafael is still Hacienda San Rafael in English, and the map has to open at the same address for both groups. Your names, the witnesses, the padrinos: the label translates, the names do not. And if the dress code says dark suit in one version and etiqueta in the other, half the guests will arrive dressed for a different wedding. Describe the actual garment in each language.

Before you send, open both languages on your phone, walk through to the confirmation and check that the reply lands in one list. Digital invitations from Send The Joy publish in a click, let you fix a translation later without changing the link, and keep every answer in one place so you stop chasing people on WhatsApp.
