Digital Invitation for a Hot Air Balloon Gender Reveal

Smoke reads differently in the air than from the ground. A digital invitation puts the time, the look-up cue and the RSVP in one link

It's 6:20 pm and forty people are staring at a wicker basket 40 metres up. The pilot pulls the cord, pink smoke drops out, and half the guests are still looking at their phones. A hot air balloon gender reveal lasts twenty seconds and only works if everyone looks up at once. You can build a digital invitation for it today from the Send The Joy collection and send the link before the wind decides otherwise.

The balloon does the reveal. The invitation does the rest: where to stand, when to look up, and what everyone should do if the flight is delayed.

Hot air balloon gender reveal: make the smoke readable from the ground

Smoke behaves like it has been dropped, not launched. From 30 to 50 metres it falls slowly enough to hold its shape while people read the colour; higher up it spreads and turns into a grey smudge. Agree the height with your pilot first, and choose the colour against the sky you will actually get at that hour, not the sky in the photos you saved.

  • Agree a low reveal height with the pilot, 30 to 50 metres, so the smoke drops and stays legible before it spreads.
  • Choose a colour against the real sky at that hour: pale pink on light blue disappears, while fuchsia or electric blue on grey reads from far off.
  • Put the group with the sun to the side or behind them. Backlit smoke looks grey, and the colour only shows when the light passes through it.
  • Keep everyone 20 metres back from the ramp. Under the basket you only see the burner; the shape of the plume needs distance.

The countdown happens on the ground, not in the basket

Send a message ten minutes before with the exact spot to watch: look above the oak at 6:30, not at the pilot. One person counts down through a speaker. If four people shout different numbers, nobody knows when it starts.

Rehearse the signal with the pilot: an orange cloth waved on the ground, a white smoke flare, or one song played from a speaker. Everyone learns it before the balloon lifts, and nobody has to guess.

A balloon reveal is not decided in the air. It is decided by who looks up, when, and how they found out the time.

Film the smoke and the faces watching it

One person films horizontally from behind the guest line and another stands near the ramp. If everyone films, the screens cover the sky. Keep the audio on: the burner, the shouting and the applause are half of the memory. Take the group photo five minutes later, once the smoke has cleared and people are looking at the camera again.

A digital invitation is a web page that opens from a link or a QR code, and your guests install nothing. In Joy Studio you write the title, the time and the line look up, and you can add up to six photos of your own, with the balloon as the cover. If the wind pushes the flight back, you change the time and the same link shows the updated version. Confirmations arrive in one ordered list inside the invitation, so you are not chasing answers in a group chat. It is digital, so there is no printing or postage; if someone wants paper, the sensible version is the link for everyone plus a few printed copies for whoever keeps them. It costs 29.99 EUR, paid once, and you can try the design for free before you buy. Pick one from the collection and send it today.
