Christening Invitations for Premature Babies, No Date

When the date depends on hospital discharge, a digital christening invitation can wait, change and be resent — same link, no reprints.

The car seat is still in its box. The christening gown is folded in a bag by the door, and the date you gave everyone six weeks ago is now a guess. Your baby arrived early, and the hospital won't put a discharge day in writing.

That doesn't slow the group chat down. Your aunt wants the date for her calendar. Your cousin asks whether to book a train. You don't have an answer yet — but you can send an invitation that holds the place without promising a day.

Christening Invitations for Premature Babies: Name First, Date Later

Call the grandparents and your siblings before anything goes out in writing. They're the ones who'll field the questions from aunts and cousins later, and a five-minute head start makes that easier. Don't send a closed save-the-date if the discharge can move. "We'd like to have her christened once she's home, we'll let you know" does the job.

  • Write the baby's full name and the word "Christening" exactly as you want them read — an uncle you haven't seen in two years shouldn't have to guess which name you're using.
  • Keep the date off the cover until the doctor confirms discharge. In a digital invitation you add it later from the editor, and the link stays exactly the same.
  • Swap the closed save-the-date for a line like "once he's home", not a day nobody can promise yet.
  • Send the link to the family group once, with one sentence explaining why the date is blank. One message beats a chain of replies.

A Baby in an Incubator Isn't a Photo for the Group Chat

Photos from the first days in the unit are medical records as much as they are pictures. A shot with tubes, wires or the incubator isn't something your child can agree to, and a photo doesn't come back once it's out. Keep those for yourselves.

If someone asks about visiting, answer in one sentence — "just the parents for now" — and leave the reasons out. Whatever detail you give today, you'll be repeating it in the spring. When discharge finally comes, don't announce it in a mass message: call the closest few first, then send the invitation with the baby already home.

The date can move. The link can't.

What to Write When the Date Isn't Set Yet

On the cover, keep the word "Christening", your baby's name and one short line — "we're waiting for you at home". In the ceremony scene, write "date and time to be confirmed" or give the church only. The editor's character counter tells you when a line is about to overflow the frame, so nothing gets cut off. If a full room is still too much for a newborn, "lunch at the grandparents' house" says it without a medical explanation.

Moving a Date Shouldn't Cost a Reprint

On paper, shifting a christening by a week means a new order, new envelopes and a call to everyone who pinned the old card to the fridge. Here you change the date in the editor and the link already sitting in the group chat shows the updated version. Say it once: "new date, open it again." Nobody ends up with two versions. If the grandmother wants something to keep in a drawer, print two or three copies and send the link to everyone else. Pick a design, try it free with your baby's name, and publish once discharge is confirmed — the date can wait, the invitation doesn't have to.
