Bachelorette Picnic in Madrid: Pick Park, Shade, Hour
Nine people, two cool boxes and a cake in the sun: pick the park for the shade it has at 18:30, fix two times and send one link that updates itself.

A bachelorette picnic in Madrid can be decided in the first ten minutes, and not by the food. Picture it: 12:40 on a Saturday in July, nine of you standing on the gravel path in El Retiro with two cool boxes and a cake going soft, and no free patch of shade in sight. The spot you had in mind is under someone else's towel. So is the next one.
Nobody organised badly. The park was fine, the guest list was fine. The order was wrong: the park, the shade and the hour had already been decided for you by the time you walked in.
Plan a bachelorette picnic in Madrid: shade before name
At noon in July there is no good corner in El Retiro. What separates a picnic where everyone is comfortable from nine people crowded under one pine is the hour you walk in, not the park you chose. If you are comparing parks for a picnic in Madrid with friends, Madrid Río and Casa de Campo give you wide lawns and large trees, and a group of ten spreads out without sitting on top of each other. Las Vistillas and Parque del Oeste work better from 19:00, with the city behind you and the light coming down. Read the park's own page first: some Madrid lawns are for walking and some are for sitting, and that is not something to discover with the tart already open.
- Shade at the hour you arrive, not the shade in the photo you saved at midday.
- Lawn rules: the park's own page tells you where a blanket is allowed and where it is not.
- How far the nearest fountain and toilet are. Both matter more than the view.
- The metro exit you will really use (Menéndez Pelayo, Ibiza, Príncipe Pío) and the walk from there with two cool boxes.
The hour gets chosen twice: arrival and shade
Fix an exact arrival time (18:30) and an end time (21:30). In Madrid the temperature drops the moment the sun goes, and the photos you take at 19:00 and at 21:00 look like two different evenings.
Shade moves. Start at 17:00 and the tree covering you now leaves you in full sun an hour later. Count on moving once, blanket and all, without making it a drama. Keep the arrival time and the cake time apart as well: getting there at 18:30 is not the same as eating at 20:00, and anyone coming straight from work needs both numbers.

Choose the park for the shade it has at 18:30, not for the name it has on a list.
Name a gate, not a park
'We'll meet in El Retiro' turns into a wall of WhatsApp messages in twenty minutes. 'Menéndez Pelayo gate, by the bandstand' turns into none. Put the map inside the invitation and both the cousin arriving by metro and the friend parking on Calle de Ibiza walk to one written point. If the plan starts in the park and carries on at a bar nearby, write both addresses together. Nobody wants to ask where the second place is at eleven at night.
Split the load before the day, too. Two small cool boxes between four people weigh half of one big one, and the heavy cool box always ends up with the same person carrying it. Give every item a name: if nobody owns the bin bags, nobody brings the bin bags.
- One large picnic blanket and two big towels. A blanket on its own never covers nine people.
- Two small cool boxes with ice instead of one big one, split between four people.
- An opener, a corkscrew and a pocket knife in the same bag, in the same person's hands all day.
- One bin bag per four guests, plus a second one for the recycling.
- A small speaker and a playlist voted on in the chat before the day.
What changes at the last minute
If Saturday looks like rain and the picnic moves to a covered porch, you correct the place and the time and the link stays exactly the same: guests see the updated version when they open it. Swap 'white and linen' for 'hats required' and there is nothing to reprint and nobody to message one by one. Replies arrive inside the invitation in an ordered list, so you know how many chairs, blankets and portions you need without chasing anyone in the group chat. Try the cover for free first, then publish the invitation once the plan is closed.
