Baby Shower Invitations With a Gift List: Ask Without Guilt

In São Paulo, asking for diapers in your baby shower invitations is normal. Asking badly isn't. Here's how to word the gift line and where to put the link.

You're typing your baby shower invitations on your phone at the kitchen table, and you reach the gift line. Your thumbs stop. In São Paulo this is an ordinary moment: the fraldário — the list left at the neighbourhood shop or the pharmacy two blocks away — is how it's done here. Nobody reads it as a bill.

What makes people uncomfortable isn't the request. It's the verb. 'Sugestão de presente' ('gift suggestion') sounds like help. 'Traga fraldas M' sounds like an invoice. Same diapers, same shop, different sentence. And that sentence decides how the whole party feels.

Baby Shower Invitations With a Gift List Are Normal in São Paulo

A fraldário is a list, not a demand. You leave it somewhere reachable — the corner shop, the pharmacy near the venue, a page you keep updated — and guests ask for it by the baby's name. So the sheet of paper isn't the problem. What you write in the invitation is. Two habits cover almost everything: name the size, and call it a suggestion.

  • Name sizes, not quantities: 'gift suggestion: diapers, sizes M and G' tells people what the baby will actually use.
  • Skip newborn sizes, or ask for one pack. Newborn fits for a few weeks; M and G last for months.
  • Mention the brand or the diaper type only if it matters in your circle. If it doesn't, leave it out.
  • Write 'gift suggestion', never 'gift required'. One word changes whether the line reads as help or as a bill.

The long version of the list doesn't belong inside the invitation text. Paste the whole catalogue and the baby shower turns into a shop window. Keep the list in a link — the store's page, the pharmacy's list, a note you keep updated — and put only that link in the invitation. One tap for anyone who wants it, one skipped line for anyone who doesn't. If someone wants paper, print a few copies for the people who'll actually keep them and send the link to everyone else.

Put the gift line at the end, after the time and the address. People open an invitation to find out when and where; the gift is context, not a headline. Write the shop or list name next to the link and stop. The same goes for the dress code: one line — 'whites and beiges' — and three people stop texting you to ask what to wear.

Know Who's Coming Before You Count Chairs

A list of names you don't have is useless. Without confirmations you're guessing how many chairs to put out and whether a cake for twenty is enough. When the RSVP sits inside the same invitation, the yeses land in one ordered list instead of five WhatsApp threads. Set the questions on the form before you publish: every detail you ask for there is a message you don't have to chase later.

The list isn't the problem. The wording is — and the wording takes a minute to fix.

If the venue moves or the party starts an hour earlier, the same link shows the new version. No 'ignore my last message', no reprinting, no second round of texts. You edit the time, the address or the gift line in your browser and the invitation your guests already have updates itself. Try a design for free, type your own words into the fields, and publish when the gift line sounds like help rather than an invoice.
