Autumn Christening Invitations: Plan B for Rain
An autumn christening runs on different rules: the light leaves early, the snack is served warm, and the rain plan has to be decided before you send anything.

It's 5:30 in the afternoon in early November. The ceremony ends, everyone comes out of the church, and the light is already gone. Most autumn christening invitations say "in the afternoon", the group photo happens on the steps in the dark, and the snack ends up on a wet terrace because nobody wrote down a back-up plan.
An autumn christening is a different brief from a summer one. Warm food, early light and rain change three things: the hour you choose, the room you book and the plan you send out. Decide those first and the rest of the day holds on its own.
Autumn christening invitations: set the hour by the light
In October, a 12:00 ceremony still finishes in daylight and the snack lands in the sun. Move the same ceremony to 17:30 in November and your guests leave the church in the dark. If the family photo in the garden matters to you, keep the ceremony before 16:00 in October and before 15:30 in November. The afternoon light goes fast once the clocks change.
- Write the hour in numbers — 17:30, not "in the afternoon". Sunset moves earlier every week, and guests need the number to decide how they dress.
- Keep the ceremony before 16:00 in October and before 15:30 in November if you want the family photo outdoors.
- Take the group photo straight after the ceremony, while the light is still there, not after the snack.
- If the snack is outside, start it by 18:00 in October. Later than that, people eat standing with their jackets on.
A warm snack changes the room you book
Hot chocolate, roast chestnuts, a cake straight out of the oven: an autumn snack is served warm, and that decides the room. You need an indoor space with a socket for the hot drinks and somewhere to leave wet coats — not the summer terrace with plastic chairs.
Walk to the entrance and look at it. If there's nowhere for umbrellas and damp coats to sit, that tells you the indoor option was the right one from the start. Keep the garden if you like, but move the snack earlier instead of later.

Autumn doesn't ask for a bigger party. It asks for an exact hour, a warm room and a back-up you decided in advance.
Decide the rain plan before you send the invitation
Close the indoor back-up and its exact address before the invitation goes out. Looking for a room the Friday before is what turns a christening into a race. If the back-up isn't confirmed yet, write it into the invitation as one line — "if it rains, we'll be at…" — and you skip twenty messages on the morning itself.
Colours, photos and replies, all in the same link
Two colours are enough — terracotta and olive, mustard and burgundy — and they should show up in the clothes of your cover photo. Choose the photo before the design: dry leaves and wool coats ask for a warm invitation, not summer watercolours. Set the confirmation deadline somewhere visible, a little earlier than usual if the back-up room is small. Replies arrive in one list inside the invitation, so you know the numbers well before christening week.
