How to Ask for Clothing Size on a Digital Invitation

Ask for clothing size on a digital invitation in one optional line, place it in the RSVP form, and keep the invitation working even if nobody answers.

Ask for clothing size on a digital invitation in one optional line, place it in the RSVP form, and keep the invitation working even if nobody answers.

You're three lines from finishing the invitation. Time, place, dress code - done. Then you stall on the one question you're not sure you're allowed to ask: what size are you? Your sister will reply without thinking. Your colleague from work will read it, close the tab and confirm with nothing but a thumbs up.

That's fine. Asking for clothing size on a digital invitation works when you treat it as a nudge, not a checkpoint. Written well and placed late, it costs nothing and saves a lot of guessing. Written badly - required field, capital letters, top of the page - a friendly detail turns into an obstacle. Here's how to do it without anyone feeling audited.

Ask for clothing size like a hint, not a toll gate

Treat it as a favour between friends: ‘If you're going to risk it with clothes, I'm a medium and I love olive green.’ One line. If nobody reads it, the invitation still does its job - guests know when to show up and where.

  • Write it as a favour, not a procedure: ‘If you're thinking about clothes, I'm a medium and olive green is always safe.’
  • Place it after the time and place, never before the confirm button. Guests already know the when and the where, so the size reads as an extra.
  • Don't mark it as required. A locked field blocks the confirmation and turns a nice detail into a hurdle.
  • Keep it to one sentence. Three lines about your wardrobe start to read like a wish list.

The size question belongs in the RSVP form

Use the questions you can configure in the confirmation form and leave it open: ‘Give me a size hint?’ Guests answer from their phone in the browser, no app and no account needed. The reply lands in the same ordered list as the names, right next to whoever wrote it.

If you'd rather not ask about size at all, ask for a colour. ‘What's your usual colour?’ works just as well for a small gift. Either way the answers stay in one place, inside the invitation itself - you're not opening five WhatsApp threads to piece them together.

Ask once, in one line, and let the answer be optional. That's the whole trick.

Three lines that work, depending on the event

For a 40th birthday: ‘Gifts optional; if it's clothing, I'm a large. Fair warning: my wardrobe is already almost all black.’ For a wedding with a formal dress code: ‘Formal dress. If you're stuck on the size, something for the house never misses.’ For a friends' dinner with a Secret Santa: ‘Add your size when you RSVP and whoever draws you will know what to look for.’

If nobody answers, change the plan

When confirmations come back without sizes, go for a gift that doesn't need a number: a bottle, a small plant, a shared ticket. Check the replies the next day and add a line - ‘If you didn't give me a size, I'm playing it safe.’ If you decide to drop the question entirely, edit the sentence in Joy Studio: the link stays the same, even for someone who received it two weeks ago. Adding a colour, a time or a map later never means reprinting or sending a correction. And if someone in the family wants paper, the sensible option is to combine: a link for everyone, a few printed copies for whoever will keep them.

One digital invitation holds all of it: the link, the confirmations and the size line you can rewrite whenever you want. Try a design for free, set up the RSVP question and publish without printing anything.
