The anniversary invitation goes out with four words on it: no gifts, please. The doorbell starts at eight. One couple arrives with a box, a friend slides an envelope into your hand, two others turn up with nothing and apologise for it twice before dinner. Nobody disobeyed you. They read four words and filled in the rest themselves.

A bare no-gifts line takes away the present and leaves a hole. Guests deal with holes their own way. Give them a reason, a replacement or a small task, and the guessing stops before the group chat starts. Here is the wording that works, where to put it, and what to do when you change your mind halfway through the planning.

A no-gifts line on an anniversary invitation is an instruction

Someone who reads only no gifts has to decide for you. One guest brings a bottle, another brings cash in a card, a third brings nothing and feels cheap about it. All three are guessing. One line of context settles it: say what you actually want, which is the evening, the person and the table.

  • Give the reason in half a line: 'The flat is already full. What we want is you at the table on Saturday.'
  • Replace the present with a task: 'Instead of a gift, bring a printed photo of us and we will hang it during dinner.'
  • If it is a small dinner, use the number: 'One long table for 24, no gifts, your seat is saved.'
  • If you want nothing at all, say so and stop: 'No gifts, no cards, nothing to bring. Just come.'

The words matter more than the typeface

'No gifts, please' reads as a request. 'No gifts allowed' reads as a rule, and rules get broken quietly, usually with a bottle of wine so the guest does not walk in empty-handed.

Write it in the first person plural. 'We have decided not to take gifts' is a decision you made, not a restriction you are putting on anyone. If there is a real reason, give it in one short sentence: you are moving in spring, you are putting the money towards a trip together, you are clearing the flat out. A reason ends the discussion before it reaches the group chat.

Your guests are not ignoring the no-gifts line. They are answering a question you never wrote down.

Where the note goes so nobody reads it too late

Do not save it for the bottom of the page. In a digital invitation the note belongs in the opening scene, next to the date and the place, because that is where your guests decide what to do. The RSVP form is the second natural spot: alongside 'Are you coming?' you can write the line that answers the question before anyone asks it in a message. And when somebody insists on asking anyway, you already have your reply: copy the sentence from your own invitation and send the link, which shows the current time and map.

Change the line without resending anything

Halfway through, you might decide you would rather people put money towards a trip than bring nothing at all. You edit the sentence and the link stays the same: nobody gets a second message, nobody reprints a card. Same for a new hour, a new venue, a dress code or a different map. Digital does not mean giving up paper you actually want to keep, so the sensible combination is one link for everyone and a few printed copies for whoever will file them in a drawer. Send The Joy is EUR 29.99 per invitation, a single payment with no subscription, guests open it in their phone browser without installing anything, and the site runs in seven languages. Write the line once, put it where people read it, and leave the rest of the evening alone.
