A birthday you can feel from the invitation

The party starts in the first message, not when the candles go out. Say who is celebrating, how, and what guests actually need to know.

A birthday is clear when, on opening the invitation, you already know whose party it is. Not “you are invited to celebrate”, but the name, the age if you want to say it, and the way that person celebrates: a long dinner, Sunday lunch, the usual bar, a terrace. The mood follows. You do not need to announce it.

Thin invitations start with a drawing of balloons and end with a time. Nobody is in between. If you remove the balloons and the text still stands, the invitation is fine. If it collapses, the drawing was doing the job that belonged to the words.

The name is the title

Write the plan the way you would explain it to someone who asks what to do. “Dinner at home at nine, bring what you drink” is a plan. “An unforgettable evening” is not. People decide with the plan, not the adjective. The more concrete it is, the easier it is to say yes.

  • The name, large, before any drawing
  • The plan told the way you would tell it
  • What to bring and what not to
  • A photo of that table, not stock confetti

The real plan, not the mood

Also say what is not needed. An adult birthday goes wrong when half the table arrives with a gift the person did not want and the other half does not know whether to bring anything. One line — “no gifts”, “a book”, “whatever you feel like drinking” — saves the awkward conversation at the door.

If there is a photo, it should be of that table or that person on an ordinary day, not a stock image of confetti. A simple cake, a few candles and house light say more than a rain of icons. A wide frame shows the whole table. Do not crop it down to a single candle.

If it reads like a generic notice, it is not your party yet.

What people need to know

Send it early enough for the date to enter a calendar that is already full, and repeat the name in the message. A link with no context gets lost. “Saturday is Marta’s birthday, everything is here” is the real invitation. The page only confirms it.
