The invitation arrives before the bouquet, before the menu and before anyone argues about a seat. It is the first place people decide whether this wedding feels like you or like one they have already seen twenty times. So it does not start with the typeface. It starts with the sentence you would say to a friend, standing up, with no paper.

A generic invitation is easy to spot: names in a decorative font, a date in digits and a “we’re getting married” that any couple could sign. It is not badly written. It is empty. The gap is filled by a detail that only exists in your story: the bar where you met, a nickname, the real time of the ceremony, the song you will not play at the drinks.

Start with the way you talk

Read the text out loud. If it sounds like a shop card, rewrite it. Formal can still be yours: formal is not the opposite of personal. It is a way of speaking. Keep a line you already use with each other and put it where a slogan would normally go. Place, time and how to get there can stay short and clear.

  • A line you already say, not a slogan
  • The date written the way you would say it
  • A photo that could not be another couple
  • A color already in the flowers, the outfit or the table

The photo and the color do the rest

The photo does not have to be the photographer’s portrait. A side view, a back view or a half frame says more than the studio pose, because it does not try to prove you are in love. If the picture could be another couple in the same light, change it. A gesture, a place of yours or late-afternoon light is enough.

Color comes after, and it should already exist somewhere in the wedding: the flowers, the suit, the cloth, the plates. One color, repeated calmly, is recognized before a rare alphabet. Type follows. If the lettering shouts and the color says nothing, the invitation looks like a catalog.

If the invitation could belong to another wedding, it is not yours yet.

The first message is design too

The note you send with the link is the first line, and almost nobody designs it. A line of yours, the date said the way you would say it, and a close that asks for a reply turn the send into the first toast. If the invitation could belong to another wedding, it is not yours yet.
