16th Birthday Invitations: Write Every Full Name

At 16 you don't invite "the class". You invite Maya, Tom and Sofia. Here's how full names, one clear time and one live link keep chairs from sitting empty.

It's Thursday night and the party is on Saturday. There's a group chat called "Bday 16" with 34 people in it, three different times mentioned, and a message from you three weeks ago that says: invite whoever you want.

That's not an invitation. It's a rumour with a cake at the end of it. At 16, nobody gets invited as "the class" — they get invited by name, with a surname. Getting that right takes ten minutes at the kitchen table and saves you a week of guessing.

16th birthday invitations need full names, not "the class"

"Everyone from school" is not a number you can cook for. Before you ring the caterer or count the pizzas, write down every guest with a first name and a surname, and count that list instead of the idea. Then split it into three blocks so you can see the real shape of the room.

  • School friends — the ones who actually turn up, not everyone in the chat.
  • Family — cousins, aunts, grandparents. They need the address and the time as well.
  • Your parents' friends — usually the ones who ask about parking.
  • Plus-ones — decide the rule yourself and write it down, or two people will be standing while the food gets cold.

The time you changed and nobody read again

You posted "we start at 9" in the group chat. Two days later you moved it to 8. Half the guests arrive when the first toast is already done. One line on the invitation sorts it out: doors at 8, dinner at 8.30.

"The usual place" is not an address. Someone will ring the wrong doorbell with a present under their arm. Put the full address and a map link in the invitation. And if there's a dress code, say it in one line — "trainers are fine, no need to dress up" — so you don't end up with half the room in heels and half in slides.

A guest who knows the name, the time and the place turns up. Everything else is guesswork.

Confirmations that land in one list

Asking "are you coming?" one by one in a private message is an afternoon of half-finished conversations. When people confirm inside the invitation, the answers arrive in one ordered list, with the questions you set yourself. Give a clear deadline — "please confirm by Friday the 12th" — and order the food with that list in front of you, not from memory.

Run through these before you send anything. It takes two minutes and catches most of the empty chairs.

  • First name and surname for every guest, plus any confirmed plus-one.
  • Exact date and time, and how long the party runs.
  • Full address and a map link — not "where we always go".
  • Dress code in one line.
  • A deadline for confirming.

If the party moves, you shouldn't have to send forty messages. A digital invitation lives at one link: change the time, the place, the map or the dress code, and anyone who opens it sees the current version. No reprints, no envelopes to send again. Guests open it in a phone browser, with no app to install, and confirm from there. So the last step is short: pick a design, write the names, share the link. If something changes on Friday, the link is still the same one.
